{"id":656,"date":"2021-06-08T10:30:08","date_gmt":"2021-06-08T15:30:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.extension.msstate.edu\/theriskproject\/?p=656"},"modified":"2021-06-16T15:38:32","modified_gmt":"2021-06-16T20:38:32","slug":"ocular-lesions-in-cattle-series-part-1-pinkeye","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.extension.msstate.edu\/theriskproject\/ocular-lesions-in-cattle-series-part-1-pinkeye\/","title":{"rendered":"Ocular Lesions in Cattle Series | Part 1: Pinkeye"},"content":{"rendered":"<hr \/>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Now is the time to ramp up your fly control program!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Severe fly infestations have been associated with increased incidence of pinkeye, or infectious bovine keratoconjunctivitis (IBK).\u00a0 Affected animals will develop epiphora (runny eyes), conjunctivitis, and corneal ulcers and scarring in more severe conditions.\u00a0 Severe scarring may result in permanent blindness.\u00a0 Photophobia (sensitivity to light) occurs and affected animals can be seen squinting and seeking shaded areas for relief.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-659\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.extension.msstate.edu\/theriskproject\/files\/2021\/05\/Ocular-Lesions-in-Cattle-Series-Part-1-img1.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"339\" height=\"234\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.extension.msstate.edu\/theriskproject\/files\/2021\/05\/Ocular-Lesions-in-Cattle-Series-Part-1-img1.png 339w, https:\/\/blogs.extension.msstate.edu\/theriskproject\/files\/2021\/05\/Ocular-Lesions-in-Cattle-Series-Part-1-img1-300x207.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 339px) 100vw, 339px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Pinkeye can be a very costly disease to beef producers from treatment costs (including labor and antibiotic costs), reduced value of animals with scarred eyes, and potentially reduced weaning weights of calves.\u00a0 Animals suffering from pinkeye may have decreased appetite due to ocular pain or decreased vision that results in an inability to locate food and water.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Pinkeye is a multifactorial disease, which means that it has many factors that contribute to the development of the disease, including bacteria and viruses.\u00a0 The causative organisms can be transmitted by the face fly as they feed on the eye secretions of affected animals.\u00a0 Flies can cause immense irritation and inflammation to the eye, predisposing the animal to subsequent infection.
