{"id":618,"date":"2021-05-24T10:30:01","date_gmt":"2021-05-24T15:30:01","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.extension.msstate.edu\/theriskproject\/?p=618"},"modified":"2021-05-25T08:19:05","modified_gmt":"2021-05-25T13:19:05","slug":"biosecurity-protecting-the-farm","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.extension.msstate.edu\/theriskproject\/biosecurity-protecting-the-farm\/","title":{"rendered":"Biosecurity:  Protecting the Farm!"},"content":{"rendered":"<hr \/>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.extension.msstate.edu\/theriskproject\/files\/2021\/05\/Picture1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-619\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.extension.msstate.edu\/theriskproject\/files\/2021\/05\/Picture1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"324\" height=\"237\" \/><\/a>A disease outbreak can cause tremendous losses to your operation, whether due to treatment costs, lost production, or even animal deaths.\u00a0 In general, diseases just don\u2019t \u201cappear\u201d on an operation \u2013 they are somehow introduced through other animals, people, equipment, or other contaminated objects.\u00a0\u00a0 Biosecurity measures are those activities taken to prevent the introduction, reintroduction or spread of diseases in an animal population.\u00a0 Biosecurity plan s will vary by operation and purpose and should be tailored to each specific farm.\u00a0 While there is no <em>one <\/em>biosecurity plan, general recommendations based on a farm assessment can be made to help develop \u201cbest management practices\u201d for herd health on your operation.\u00a0 Biosecurity plans can also be disease-specific or situation-specific.\u00a0 For example, there are biosecurity plans designed to protect against bovine viral diarrhea and Johne\u2019s disease, biosecurity plans to protect animals who travel for show or exhibition, and biosecurity plans for breeding stock.<\/p>\n<p>A new on-farm Livestock Biosecurity Assessment Tool was introduced this past month thanks to the support of the 2021 USDA Farm Bill grant program.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p>If you are interested in finding out more about performing a biosecurity assessment of your operation, contact your local veterinarian or the state beef extension veterinarian at <a href=\"mailto:huston@cvm.msstste.edu\">huston@cvm.msstste.edu<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A disease outbreak can cause tremendous losses to your operation, whether due to treatment costs, lost production, or even animal deaths.\u00a0 In general, diseases just don\u2019t \u201cappear\u201d on an operation \u2013 they are somehow introduced through other animals, people, equipment, &hellip;
