The final ruling from the FDA on Veterinary Feed Directives was published in the Federal Register on June 3, 2015.
The objective of this ruling is to promote the judicious use of medically important antimicrobial drugs in food animals. Specifically, guidelines for industry are provided to :
1- phase out the use of medically important antibiotics for growth or feed efficiency purposes, and
2- bring the therapeutic uses of medically important antibiotics in feed under the supervision of a veterinarian.
Are you prepared for the new VFD regulations which will become effective in December 2016? The next year will prove to be both a challenge and an opportunity for veterinarians and livestock producers alike as we examine current and future herd health practices.
